What is Scientific Notation?
It’s what people use to make very large or very small numbers easier to write out and easier to solve problems. It is still the same number just a shortened version of it.
What does it look like?
· 4x10^8
· 5x10^3
· 2x10^-5
· 8.6x10^-6

How to write Scientific notation
· What is the scientific notation for 4000?
· Write out the number 4000
· Put your pencil where the decimal is and move the decimal towards the number that is greater than 0 but less than 10. In this case the number is 4.
4 0 0 0. ---> 4 0 0 . 0 ---> 4 0 . 0 0 ---> 4. 0 0 0
· Now count the number of spaces you moved the decimal until you reached the new spot of your decimal.
· The number of spaces you have is the number that you are going to raise the 10 to.
· Because 4 is the ONLY number before the decimal that is the number you are multiplying by the 10.
· So the answer to this problem is…?
· We moved 3 spaces so my 10 will look like 10^3
· And 4 is in front of the decimal so it will look like ---> 4x10^3 <---- and that is your Final answer.

How to know if the superscript is positive or negative.
· If you move the decimal forward (left) then the superscript is positive.
· If you move the decimal backwards(right) then the superscript is negative.
* When converting from scientific notation you need to move the decimal right or left the amount of spaces according to the super script. ( Exponent ) *
Ex: 4x10^3 ---> move the decimal right 3 spaces = 4000
